Community support is all around us, all the time, though we might not realise it – from the big things like charity fundraisers, to the little things like friendly chats with your neighbour, we’re all a vital part of our bigger society and making the world a better place. And the best part is, it sustains itself: we feel happier knowing others have our back, which makes us want to give the same support in return! It’s our Social Responsibility.

Here at Topic of Cancer, we probably know the importance of community support and social responsibility more than anyone – we’re endlessly grateful to see how our fundraisers, regular donors and support groups make such a vital difference towards uplifting those impacted by cancer, and funding the valiant fight to beat it once and for all.

We’ll always be proud to be a steadfast pillar for our communities to lean on – in short, we’ve got your back.

While charities and individuals of course make up a huge component of social responsibility in the world around us, we wanted to draw attention to another supporting pillar: companies!

Topic of Cancer is thrilled to announce that in January, Menzies of Woking made us their charity of the year.  Followed in March by Savills Guildford who also named us their charity of the year.  We’re so grateful for their support and we are certain our ongoing relationship with them will continue to contribute to supporting those impacted by cancer, and for funding our incredible immunotherapy researchers and tech.

We wanted to celebrate these partnerships by drawing attention to how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) makes businesses so important to charities. CSR can be neatly summed up to mean how businesses give back to the societies around them, using their influence and resources to do good.

Corporations, like individuals, have a social responsibility to honour and support the people they provide service and products to. But unlike most individuals, they’re often in a much better position to do it with a big impact. This is why CSR is so important; they can offer vital assistance to charities that even the most selfless and generous people (looking at you guys!) can’t match.

Companies support charities for the same sorts of reasons people become individual donors – the owners may have personal closeness to their cause, for instance. However, there’s also lots of mutual benefit for companies teaming up with charities too!

It’s a great way of boosting public relations and brand image, as well as being a powerful deciding factor for customer choices. I know personally I’d rather buy from a place that supports cancer research over one that doesn’t!

It’s also very effective at getting a business’s name out there, and of course for securing relevant support for their staff; after all, the special relationship between charities and companies is a two way street, and we’re always striving to give back to the businesses that choose to support us. We’re proud to tell all our supporters just how much companies like Savills and Menzies mean to us!

Especially for a charity such as ourselves with barely any overheads, entirely run by volunteers, their support is invaluable; it’s practically all funnelled directly into helping push the field of cancer immunotherapy to greater heights, saving lives and families in the process.

And so, with that all said, we’d like to thank Savills Guildford and Menzies of Woking again for their support, and for continuing to uphold their Corporate Social Responsibility – and to all of our lovely supporters, donors and volunteers, keep on making a difference, as you always do.
