Topic of Cancer Newsletter #1 May 2020
Welcome to the first issue of our formal newsletter which is to be issued bi-monthly to keep you abreast of developments within Topic of Cancer, particularly important at this time when we cannot meet face to face.
There have been several changes in the Board of Trustees in the last year so we thought it might be helpful to describe the current team. As there are only a few of us and we all live locally to Guildford we should like to encourage you to get to know us.
Who Are We?
At the helm is Kim Ronaldson who has taken over from Nigel Lewis-Baker as Chair. Nigel has kindly agreed to continue as Honorary President and is invaluable as our ambassador. We really appreciate the time, effort and dedication Nigel spent building this great charity.
Our Vice-Chair is Anne Powell-Evans and current Trustees Hardev Pandha and Alan Loryman have been joined by Tony Chant and Sarah Bishop whom we are delighted to welcome to the team.
Tony has spent most of his professional career in the pharmaceutical industry, firstly in sales and marketing for a leading US pharmaceutical company before joining the world of advertising In need of a break from pharmaceuticals and due to his love of travel, Tony bought in to holiday travel franchise company in 2016 which started as a ‘hobby’ and has since become his passion. Tony and his family have lived in Surrey for nearly 30 years and enjoy the community of the small Surrey villages and participating in local events.
Sarah works for Vantage Point magazine, and is committed to help local businesses raise their visibility and discoverability through the magazine. She has set up a golf society through the Connect Surrey networking group and organises very informal and relaxed days throughout the year, where proceeds go to support Topic of Cancer. She will continue these events in 2020 and through her work at Vantage Point magazine will actively look to support Topic of Cancer. She lives just outside Guildford with her family.
What Do We Do?
The Trustees meet every 2 months. At this meeting, we cover Fund raising and Events, Finance, Publicity, talks and networking , Website and Social Media, Marketing and reports from the Representatives of the Support Groups, Choir and Fitness classes and receive an update on research matters from Prof.Pandha.
Whilst our members have not been able to meet up, the choir, under the excellent tutelage of Emily Bollon, have continued to rehearse on Monday evenings and, in partnership with ThriveFit, the fitness classes have continued virtually 3 times a week. Fitness bands were recently delivered to those at home who needed them to benefit fully from the classes. If there is anything else we can do to support our members, please let us know.
Recent and Future Events
The cancellation of events and the loss of fundraising income will have a severe impact on Topic of Cancer which, although not a large charity, has ongoing financial commitments. The choir and fitness groups still need financing and the Trustees are working hard to initiate new sources of funding so that we can make certain that the research team continues to have our support.
On April 26th 2 of our Trustees and a Patron took part in the 2.6 Challenge which replaced the London Marathon and succeeded in raising £1700. The donation pages are still open if you would like to donate.
|Sarah’s #2.6 challengeSarah did a massive Bootcamp challenge in her back garden – 26 reps of 26 exercises 26 times so a total of 17,576 exercises which took just over 7 hours. https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/sarahbishop35||Being at the more elderly end of the spectrum Anne and her husband, Patron Glyn Powell-Evans, did 2.6 hours nonstop gardening and 26 minutes on the cross trainer respectively! www.twopointsixchallenge.co.uk|
