The best way to fight any infection is by using the body’s own defences – the immune system.

When a threat is identified in the blood an army of white cells is instructed to attack the virus or infection and after their victory they remain alert for that same problem to arise again, the basis of vaccinations.

As cancer develops, it too alerts immune cells just like and infection. Unfortunately, the cancer quickly subdues the immune system and shields itself from immune attack. This is done both physically by creating a barrier of hostile cells around it and also in general terms by impairing the function of circulating immune cells, so-called cancer immune suppression.

…less unpleasant and debilitating side effects…

We know that reversing this immune suppression leads to a renewed attack on the cancer cells and a long term control or cure of the cancer. This is in contrast to current chemotherapy, radiotherapy or new targeted agents which temporarily subdue the cancer, without altering its natural history. Immunotherapy is the use of any treatment which primarily uses the immune system to kill cancer cells. It is a highly specific, powerful and focused treatment which may be associated with fewer side effects than other kinds of treatment, important for the quality of life of our patients.

…more accurate targeting of cancer cells…

Research is always expensive and Immunotherapy is no exception so we need your help to ensure our team in Guildford, one of only three establishments specialising in this field in the UK at the moment, can continue this vital work. Global recognition and plaudits are not enough. We have to raise funds and awareness and YOU could be beating cancer with us.
